Understand your business requirements
What are you trying to accomplish with new software? Answering this question may be trickier than it seems on the surface. Choosing the correct software is best done when you are as specific as possible with your goals and objectives. How does this software fit in with your strategic plans?
Talk to your users
The inclusion of end users needs to be a carefully considered process. You can’t include everyone. Every single person has different tastes in software, technological understanding and differing opinions on how the system should work. Consider creating a leadership group from areas that the software will impact. Guide them through your business requirements and share the vision. Creating user buy-in early can create a feeling of empowerment and help you catch scenarios you might have missed or misrepresented.
Understand software is only a tool
Learn what capabilities the software has and compare those to your business requirements; despite what many vendors will tell you it will not do absolutely everything! Does this software solve X? It’s a good idea to compare the whole product with your entire list of requirements. We recommend participating in a live demo when you can and we can arrange that. You will be able to visualize your processes within this software and get a chance to ask questions. Determine if the shortcomings you discover are critical processes or a part of your wish list. If the software does not’t meet crucial requirements, move on and find something more suitable.
